As part of the Mediterranean preparatory process for the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, 2024, IME and its partners organised the 5th Mediterranean Water Forum in Tunis from 5 to 7 February 2024 ‘Together for shared water sobriety’.

The regional process is one of the four main components of the World Water Forum, which aims to give the forum its full legitimacy as the privileged platform of the World Water Community, which includes all stakeholders committed to defining and bringing forward the solutions needed to advance the cause of water in the world.

Initiated in 2011 by the Institut Méditerranéen de l'Eau, the Mediterranean Water Forum aims to consolidate cooperation and the exchange of know-how and experience in the field of water by mobilising all the stakeholders in the Mediterranean region concerned by the issue of water, namely: representatives of States, decision-making bodies, local and regional authorities, parliamentarians, donors, representatives of businesses and professionals, regional networks and civil society.

Through this Forum, the Mediterranean presents itself as a hub of innovative water management solutions that have been developed or adapted locally to meet the region's current challenges, including those related to the impacts of climate change.  It also highlights how the Mediterranean region is developing an integrated implementation framework through the Union for the Mediterranean's Water Agenda, while serving other important regional and sub-regional political and technical frameworks, ensuring that different water management actions reinforce each other, providing a holistic solution to evolving needs.  In doing so, the forum showcases the value of the Mediterranean region in developing, adapting and implementing effective and integrated water resources management (IWRM) solutions. It also highlights the potential for replicating these solutions to address emerging global issues, particularly as a factor in employment, prosperity, stability and peace.

The themes proposed for the regional Mediterranean process are in line with the priorities of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali and with the thematic process. The selected themes are steered by a working group to organise reflection and identify innovative solutions developed at Mediterranean level.

1.       Water, Energy, Food and Environment approach (WEFE)

2.       Water Mix and New Vision of Demand by 2050
